Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the Tours go?

Mexico Nature Tours itineraries are usually designed by the consensus of the participants. Since experiencing maximum biodiversity is invariably the goal, we head for the most diverse areas of Mexico. Usually that means southern Mexico and especially the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz, Puebla, and Guerrero. But anything is possible and all of Mexico contains areas of interest for ecotourism. In addition to Mexico, Jeff has led ecotours in other countries as well.

When do the tours go?

Mexico Nature Tours can organize an ecotour at any time of the year. Depending on the area of botanical interest, tours usually operate at some point during the dry season of southern Mexico (November-May). The period of greatest floral display is late October-December, on the heels of the rainy season. Cycads and xerophytes are often seen to best advantage between January and May when other plants are likely to be deciduous. Birding is usually best between February and May. Reptiles and insects are best seen during the rainy season (June-October).

How do we go and for how long?

The normal mode of transportation is in an air-conditioned van. Tour duration generally ranges from 6 to 13 days. Accommodation typically consists of moderate hotels (1-3 stars) and meals consist of Mexican cuisine as available. Every consideration is given to participants with dietary restrictions. Tours usually include a modest to moderate amount of hiking depending on the itinerary. Smoking is not permitted within the vehicle.

How much does a tour cost?

Cost is based primarily on the number of participants, the number of days, and the relative quality of the desired accommodation and meals. Other significant factors that affect the price include the distances to be covered and the types of activities to be undertaken. And, of course, as the price of traveling in Mexico increases so does the cost of participating on an ecotour. As of January 2016, the average cost per person per full day was $300, inclusive of everything from point of departure in Mexico.

What do I get for my money?

The participation fee for a Mexico Nature Tour with Jeff Chemnick covers almost everything. The price of the tour includes all accommodation and transportation, meals and beverages (plenty of bottled water and 2 beers per day), plus all fuel, toll and entry fees for the duration of the tour from the point of departure in Mexico.
